Per tradition, now @hadleywickham is introducing the conference, including the new conf::contest #PositConf2024 #RStats #PyData ๐Ÿงต4/x

My goal this year: recruit 18 more people to submit full #TidyTuesday datasets using our new process outlined at https://github.com/rfordatascience/tidytuesday/blob/master/data%2Fcurated%2Ftemplate%2Finstructions.md
Contact me here or in person if you're interested in giving a try! #PositConf2024 #RStats #PyData ๐Ÿงต 3/x

We begin with James Wade and coworkers talking about how Dow uses @Posit tools #PositConf2024 #RStats #PyData ๐Ÿงต2/x

The first keynote begins any minute now! #PositConf2024 #RStats #PyData ๐Ÿงต1/x

Remember the Pac-Man* rule! Leave a space when you're chatting between talks for someone else to join! #PositConf2024 #RStats #PyData ๐Ÿงต 5/x

* Pac-Man was a video game in the 70s and 80s. It was simple but extraordinarily popular. The main character was a circle with a wedge-shaped mouth that opened and closed constantly as you moved him around a maze, fleeing (but sometimes eating) ghosts. It had a Saturday morning cartoon and a breakfast cereal. I don't know if the non-olds know that.

How much does cost ๐Ÿ’ฒ๐Ÿ’ฒ CRAN?

If I am reading this right PyPi #python cost more than 1.8M a month without accountin volunteer and paid employees. Most of it is in the cloud, which #rstats equivalent would be cloud.r-project.org (which I think Posit pays?)
There are also 3 people leading and as CRAN there are other people (but CRAN manually reviews all submissions!).
I think that having mirrors distributed across universities lowers costs but just guessing.

As requested over DM, today's population density map is the Netherlands. Lots of labels here so I hope they're all correct!

The final installment in the series:
"The-Quest-For-Performance" from my blog, discussing #python #numpy #numba, #rstats @openmp_arb #openMP enhancements of #Perl code and #simd

Bottom line: I will not be migrating to Python anytime soon.

Food for thought: The Perl interpreter (and many of the modules) are deep down massive C programs. Perhaps one can squeeze real performance kicks by looking into alternative compilers, compiler flags & pragmas ?

Stoked to announce a new release of `plot2`, the powerful and lightweight (0-dep) extension ๐Ÿ“ฆ for #rstats base plotting!

What's new? A bunch of things, including area plots and facets. Draw plots like the below with single/simple function calls. https://github.com/grantmcdermott/plot2

Soโ€ฆ fashion and received wisdom traced back to the turn-of-the-century boom in shitty #Perl, supported by the belief that they're protected from building a shitty melange of #shell, #sed, #awk, #Python, and #Rstats?

It is a step backwards, likely explained by people migrating to #bioconductor (in #rstats) or #biopython and wanting to break from clean from #perl. However neither R nor python provided the facilities that perl has to deal with features in text and flat text files.

We got it. You hate #Rstats. However, your opinion is based on a poor knowledge of the ecosystem. But more important, you were irrespective to the thousands of @rstats developers to devote their time to open source software.

I think I am 50% done finding a quadrafecta : a simultaneous hit piece against #Perl #clang #fortran & #rstats.

This one only manages to trash talk #perl and #rstats, so it has some ways to go.

https://stefanoborini.com/why-r-is-the-new-perl/

PS 1Gotta admit that the point about the object systems in R is somewhat spot on
PS 2 #php gets a dishonorable mention
PS3 I will continue to find ways to continue using all 4 of the aforementioned languages, as they are all performant and deliver in complementary ways.

The NY Times article on pedestrian fatalities (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/12/11/upshot/nighttime-deaths.html) is still heavy on my mind. So much so that I looked at the FARS data myself and created a chart of when fatalities occurred in relation to the time of sunset (i.e. a more explicit version of the NYT chart faceted by month)*. It's wild how concentrated fatalities are right after sunset. Blog post forthcoming.

* My chart only contains 2016-2021 data; the NYT chart goes back to 2000.
#VisionZero #rstats #dataViz

This post shows
* what highly optimized #perl can achieve relative to compiled languages in the cloud.
* you should buy your own bare metal server
These reasons is why I stopped wasting time and do nothing but #Perl, #Clang some #Rstats for my research projects.

@Perl

Itโ€™s just a comment to #Perl. The same happens with #Nim, #RakuLang, #PHP, #PowerShell, #Python, #Ruby, #Rstats, #make, #Elixir, #Juliaโ€ฆ

When he had it generate tests, the tests didn't work and weren't necessarily good tests. Oops! It had a good start still, though. #RStatsNYC #RStats

Once he got the code working, he had it give him steps to turn it into a package. He can later use those steps to feed back in. #RStatsNYC #RStats

Interacting with chatgpt, he was able to generate functions that generated a valid plot. #RStatsNYC #RStats

He's ascribing a lot more "understanding" to chatgpt than it deserves. But I'm somewhat impressed with it explaining why @dontrun is needed in the docs. #RStatsNYC #RStats

It used base R to start, but he could prompt it to use the tidyverse. #rstatsnyc #RStats

Main take-away: chatgpt can be useful to get things done quick, but check it! Jared trusts it more than I do! Remember that chatgpt isn't designed to be correct; it's designed to SEEM correct. There's a huge, dangerous difference.

Hi Hello. I'm Meghan Harris๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿพ

I guess I should make an intro post? Currently spending my time taking care of the little one, coding in #rstats, or doing both. If we're connected on the bird site but not here, feel free to connect (and vice versa - names the same over there)

Project-wise, I'm finishing up the new Tidy Trekker Site, working on some #rtistry #genart case studies, and other things that will be announced next year! ๐Ÿคฉ

Here's a selfie and some artwork I returned to because why not.
