Advanced #Programming in the #UNIX Environment
Week 4, time(3) is an illusion...
We look a little bit closer into what our systems think of "#time", something that experts most accurately describe as a big ball of wibbly, wobbly, timey, wimey... stuff. We'll discuss managing the data structures used to represent "time" and handling arbitrary concepts such as leap seconds, timezones, and (ugh) Daylight Savings Time. It gets silly real quick.

At a conference once I attended a talk by... I don't remember, but I think he was one of the main developers on #Perl's DateTime module.
My take-away was pretty much: "Guys, this timekeeping stuff is so hard, you have no idea."
So what I learned, really, was never try to roll your own #time library. People who have worked on it for years say it's basically impossible. Use their code; at least it will be less wrong than whatever you would have come up with.
General #relativity has been wildly successful at describing how #gravity works and how it shapes the large-scale structure of the #universe.
#Space-time tells #matter how to move; matter tells space-#time how to curve.
Yet the #mathematics of general relativity is also profoundly counterintuitive.
What does a space look like if it is almost a #vacuum, having just a tiny amount of mass.
Is it necessarily almost flat?

What began as a straightforward #documentary about the #ProgressiveRock group #KingCrimson as it turned 50 and its notorious bandleader #RobertFripp mutated into something very different—an exploration of #music, #time, #cults, #mortality, #family, and the transcendent power of #art to change lives. But with #jokes.

It's hard for people to visualize removing tons or billions of tons of #carbon #dioxide (CO₂). I propose we talked about CO₂ #removal (CDR) like a #time #machine (e.g., this machine will take us back 5 minutes). For example:
Q: How far back in time does planting 100 million #trees take us?
A: If one mature tree takes up an average of 25 kg of CO₂ per year, then 100 million trees will take up 2.5 MtCO₂. That's a time machine that takes us back 33 minutes and 6 seconds in a year. It's not a lot.
