@fullywoolly my ICQ and IRC overlapped but IRC was always where I spent most of my time. AIM was an afterthought.

If you want insecure chat, do IRC or a derivative - but why would you want that?

Signal. Signal is the correct answer today. Use Signal.

@tbortels I think there’s a place for unbounded community chat (much like here), where anybody can join in and new people can find community. This is a different use case than chats with a group of people I already know.

That place is irc or mastodon or 47 other venues. We have that place.
